Rumi

"In my Soul there is a temple, a shrine, a mosque, a church
where I kneel.

Prayer should bring us to an altar
where no walls or names exist.
Is there not a region of Love,
where the Sovereignty is illuminated nothing,
Where ecstasy gets poured into itself and becomes lost,
Where the wing is fully alive but has no mind or body?
In my Soul there is a temple, a shrine, a mosque, a church that dissolves,
That dissolves in God."

Rabia Basri
female Muslim saint and Sufi mystic (714 - 801)

"Oh fly , of fly, O my soul-bird,
fly to your primordial home!
You have escaped from the cage now-
your wings are spread in the air.
Oh travel from brackish water
now to the fountain of life!
Return from the place of the sandals
now to the high seat of souls!
Go on! Go on! we are going,
and we are coming, O soul,
From this world of separation
to union, a world beyond worlds!"

Rumi

Rumi

Γνωρίζεις τι είσαι;

Rūmī  (1207 - 1273)

Lucian Blaga

Νow my precious soul
how long are you going to
waste yourself
in this wandering journey
Can't you hear the voice
can't you use your swifter wings
and answer the call?

Rūmī  (1207 - 1273)

Ω  άρπα μου;
Ω  άρπα μου;

Mikhail Naimy (1889 - 1988)  - The Book of Mirdad

Rūmī  (1207 - 1273)

The way to You
lies clearly in my heart
and cannot be seen or known to the mind.
As my words turn to silence
Your sweetness surrounds me.

Sanai (1080 - 1141)

Do not ask me where I am going,
As I travel in this limitless world,
Where every step I take is my home.

 Dogen (1200 - 1253)

Cold Mountain is a house
Without beans or walls.
The six doors left and right are open
The hall is sky blue.
The rooms all vacant and vague
The east wall beats on the west wall
At the center nothing.

I've lived at Cold Mountain - how many autumns.
Alone, I hum a song - utterly without regret.
Hungry, I eat one grain of Immortal medicine
Mind solid and sharp. Leaning on a stone.

HanShan (9th century)  - The Cold Mountain

Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) in Anhui, China
This body's lifetime is like a bubbles's
may as well let things go
plans and events seldom agree
who can step back doesn't worry
we blossom and fade like flowers
we gather and part like clouds
earthly thoughts I forgot long ago
withering away on a mountain peak.

Issa (1763 - 1827)

I gaze on myself in the stream's emerald flow
Or sit on a boulder by a cliff.
My mind, a lonely cloud, leans on nothing,
Needs nothing from the world and its endless events.

HanShan (9th century)

Wake, butterfly -
It's late, we've miles
to go together.

Basho (1644 - 1694)

And if it would be a restless nightingale, be a nightingale!
You are a part and Reality is the Whole,
So for a few days only meditate on the Whole, be the Whole!
If in your heart a rose appears, be a rose!

On the lute of my heart plays only one song of love:
Because of this melody, from head to foot, I am in love.
Truly, for ages I’ll never be able
To pay what I owe for one moment of love.

To my rosy cheeked friend I said: ‘O, you with a mouth like a rosebud!
Do not always hide your face as if you are a flirting girl!’
She laughed and said: ‘Unlike the beauties of this world,
In the curtain I am manifest and without the curtain I am hidden.

Without a veil your countenance cannot be seen,
Without a veil your eyes cannot be seen.
Unless one is experiencing complete enlightenment
The source of the sun cannot be seen.

Being manifests Itself in everything.
If you want to discover Its state in everything,
Go and see how the bubbles are on top of the wine:
The wine is they in them and they are wine in the wine!

Neighbour, companion, fellow traveller, all are He!
In mendicant’s habit and in king’s satin, all are He!
In the assemblies of separation and in the private places of union,
By God, all are He, once again: by God, all are He.

O, radiance has been given to the mirror because of Your face.
No one has ever seen a mirror without Your face.
No, no! It is because of Your grace,
That in every mirror You Yourself appear and not Your face.

O, You in whose holy tabernacle none has any place:
The world appears because of You, but of You is no trace.
You and I, we are not separated, but I,
I, though You don’t need me, I am in need of Your grace.

O, heart! How long will you search for perfection in schools?
How long will you try to perfect philosophy, geometry and all its rules?
Every thought which is no remembrance of God is an evil inspiration,
Be modest before God! How long these evil thoughts? (Leave them to fools!)

We have run on the path of love all our life,
We have searched with great force for union with You all our life.
To catch one glimpse of You is better for our sight
Than the beauty of earthly beauties all our life.

Each attractive form that shows its face to you,
Destiny will soon steal it from the eyes of you.
Go and give your heart to someone who in all turns of existence
Always has been with you and always will be with you.

O, man of importance, perhaps with money and offspring you may start,
But it is clear that with all these after a short time you will have to part.
Happy is he who connects his heart to the Beloved.
And with heart and soul is tied to the folk of heart.

Jami   (1414 - 1492)

All through eternity
Beauty unveils His exquisite form
in the solitude of nothingness.
He holds a mirror to His Face
and beholds His own beauty.
He is the knower and the known
the seer and the seen
No eye but His own
has ever looked upon this Universe.

 Rūmī  (1207 - 1273)

Love rests on no foundation.
It is an endless ocean, with no beginning or end.

Rūmī

Love cannot be carried or contained in words
Love's an ocean of unfathomed depth:
Infinite, the ocean's drops of water
Yet the Seven Seas, tiny, next to love.

Rūmī

The ocean says, Quit pretending to be clear.
That pretense keeps you from receining
what I can give.

 Rūmī

Dive in the ocean.
Leave and let the sea be you.

 Rūmī

You must rise above
the gloomy clouds
covering the mountaintop
otherwise, how will you
ever see the brightness?

Ryokan  (1758 - 1831)

Lift the veil
that obscures the heart
and there
you will find
what you are looking for.

Kabir  (c. 1440 - c. 1518)

So very still
even cherry blossoms are not stirred
by the temple bell.

Fuhaku (1714-1807)

One by one at day's end
the birds take flight
in all directions
Which could lead me to you?

Lady Izumi Shikibu (987 - unknown)

From the white dewdrops
learn the way
to the pure land.

Issa (1763 - 1827)

The birds have vanished from the sky.
Now the last cloud rains away.
We sit together, the mountain and me,
until only the mountain remains.

Li Po (701 - 762)

Once in a while
I just let time wear on
leaning against a solitary pine
standing speechless
as does the whole universe!
Ah, who can share
this solitude with me?

Ryokan (1758 - 1831)

The sky
Is a suspended blue ocean.
The stars are the fish
That swim.
The planets are the white whales
I sometimes hitch a ride on,
And the sun a nd all light
Have forever fused themselves
Into my heart and upon
My skin.
There is only one rule
On this Wild Playground,
For every sign Hafiz has ever seen
Reads the same.
They all say,
"Have fun, my dear; my dear, have fun,
In the Beloved's Divine
Game,
O, in the Beloved's
Wonderful
Game.

A Suspended Blue Ocean

Hafiz  (1325 - 1389)

Behold, it comes in might,
The power that is not power,
The light that is in darkness,
The shade in dazzling light.
It is joy that never spoke,
And grief unfelt, profound,
Immortal life unlived,
Eternal death unmourned.
It is not joy nor sorrow,
But that which is between,
It is not noght nor morrow,
But that which joins them in.
It is sweet rest in music;
And pause in sacred art;
The silence between speaking;
Between two fits of passion –
It is the calm of heart.
It is beauty never seen,
And love that stands alone,
It is song that lives un-sung,
And knowledge never known.
It is death between two lives,
And lull between two storms,
The void whence rose creation,
And that where it returns.
To it the tear-drop goes,
To spread the smiling form
It is the Goal of Life,
And Peace — its only home!

Peace
Swami Vivekananda (1863 - 1902)

There was a dawn I remember when my soul
heard something from your soul.
I drank water from your spring,
and felt the current take me.

Rūmī

Rūmī

The moon came to me last night
With a sweet question.
She said,
"The sun has been my faithful lover
For millions of years.
Whenever I offer my body to him
Brilliant light pours from his heart.
Thousands then notice my happiness
And delight in pointing
Toward my beauty.

Hafiz  (1325 - 1389)

I am your moon and your moonlight too
I am your flower garden and your water too.
I have come all this way eager for you,
without shoes or shawl.
I want you to laugh, to kill all your worries, to love you, to nourish you.
Oh sweet bitterness, I will soothe you and heal you.
I will bring you roses. I too have been covered with thorns.

Rūmī

I am like heaven, like the moon, like a candle by your glow;
I am all reason, all love, all soul, by your soul.

Rūmī

Do you know what you are?
You are a manuscript of a divine letter.
You are a mirror reflecting a noble face.
This universe is not outside of you.
Look inside yourself;
 everything that you want,
you are already that.

Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

The way to You
lies clearly in my heart
and cannot be seen or known to the mind.
As my words turn to silence
Your sweetness surrounds me.

The way to You
Hakim Sanai (1080 - 1131)

Τι είναι αυτός ο ποταμός που θες να διασχίσεις;
Βλέπεις κανένα να κινείται στην όχθη;
 θα κάνει την ψυχή σου να ξεδιψάσει;

Kabir  (1440 - 1518)

I didn’t know love would make me this
crazy, with my eyes
like the river Ceyhun
carrying me in its rapids
out to sea,where every bit
of shattered boat
sinks to the bottom.

An alligator lifts its head and swallows
the ocean, then the ocean
floor becomes
a desert covering
the alligator in
sand drifts.

Changes do
happen. I do not know how,
or what remains of what
has disappeared
into the absolute.

I hear so many stories
and explanations, but I keep quiet,
because I don’t know anything,
and because something I swallowed
in the ocean
has made me completely content
with ignorance.

Ignorance
Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

Inside this river there is a moon
which is not a reflection.
From the river bottom the moon speaks.
I travel in continuous conversation
with the river as it goes.
Whatever is above
and seemingly outside this river
is actually in it.
Merge with it, in here or out there,
as you please.
This is the river of rivers
and the beautiful silence of endless talking.

Inside this river
 Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

 Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

  Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931)

Don't worry about saving these songs!
And if one of our instruments breaks,
it doesn't matter.
We have fallen into the place
where everything is music.
The strumming and the flute notes
rise into the atmosphere,
and even if the whole world's harp
should burn up, there will still be
hidden instruments playing.
So the candle flickers and goes out.
We have a piece of flint, and a spark.
This singing art is sea foam.
The graceful movements come from a pearl
somewhere on the ocean floor.
Poems reach up like spindrift and the edge
of driftwood along the beach, wanting!
They derive
from a slow and powerful root
that we can't see.
Stop the words now.
Open the window in the center of your chest,
and let the spirits fly in and out.

Where Everything Is Music
Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

For your sake, I hurry over land and water:
For your sake, I cross the desert
and split the mountain in two,
And turn my face from all things,
Until the time I reach the place
Where I am alone with You.

To Reach God
Al  Hallaj (c. 858 - 922)

I offer homage to the god and the goddess
The infinite parents of the world
The Lover out of boundless love
Has become the Beloved
Both are made of the same silks
and share the same food
Out of love for each other they merge
and part for the joy of being two
They sit together on the same ground
in the same garment of light
From endless time they have lived this way
in union and in bliss
Without the goddess he is not
and because of him she exists
It is God alone in every form
the male and the female
Shiva and Shakti
From the union of these two
the universe has come to be
Two lutes, one note
Two lamps, one light
Two eyes, one sight
Two lips, one word
Two hearts, one love
In this way these two create one universe
The lover out of boundless love
 has become the beloved
Embarrassed by his formlessness
and her own graceful form
She adorned him
with a universe of myriad names and forms
In unity there is little to behold
But the playful Shakti has presented
all the riches of the world
While Shiva sleeps
she is giving birth to all things
Living and non-living
And when she rests
her husband disappears
When he hides himself
he can't be found without her grace
They are mirrors to each other
When he embraces her
it is own bliss that he enjoys
Shiva the enjoyer of all,
can find no joy without her
She is his form and her beauty
comes from her lover
And in their merging they enjoy
 this feast together
Shiva and Shakti are the same
Like musk and its fragrance
Or gold and its luster
Embracing each other
 they merge into one
As darkness and light
at the breaking of the dawn
The lover out of boundless love
 has become the beloved
And when the time of dissolution comes
The ocean and the river merge
into the primal water
And the air and its motion merge
 in the universal air
And the sun and its brilliance merge
 in the elemental fire
And while trying to see Shiva and Shakti
Both I and my vision disappeared
Like the wood that gives itself onto the fire
And the river that gives itself onto the sea
When my ego is out
I become Shiva and Shakti.

Amritanubhav (The Nectar of Mystical Experience)
 Jnanadev  (1275 - 1296)

Does the rose have to do something?
No, the purpose of a rose is to be a rose.
Your purpose is to be yourself.
You don't have to run anywhere to become someone else.
You are wonderful just the way you are.
This teaching of the Buddha allows us to enjoy ourselves
The blue sky, and everything that is refreshing and healing
In the present moment.
We already have everything we are looking for,
Everything we want to become.
We are already a Buddha
So why not just take the hand of another Buddha
And practice walking meditation?
Just be.
Just being in the moment in this place
Is the deepest practice of meditation.
The Heart Sutra says that there is "nothing to attain."
We meditate not to attain enlightenment,
Because enlightenment is already in us.
We don't need to search anywhere.
We don't need to practice to obtain some high position.
We can enjoy every moment.
People talk about entering nirvana,
But we are already there.
Aimlessness and nirvana are one.
We have everything we need
To make the present moment the happiest in our life,
Even if we have a cold or a headache.
We don't have to wait until
We get over our cold to be happy.
Having a cold is part of life.
I am happy in the present moment.
I do not ask for anything else.
I do not expect any additional happiness.
Aimlessness is stopping and realizing
The happiness that is already available.

A Rose is a Rose
Thich Nhat Hanh (1926 -    )

Come to my garden walk, my love.
Pass by the fervid flowers that press
themselves on your sight.
Pass them by, stopping at some chance joy,
which like a sudden wonder of sunset illumines, yet elude.
For lover's gift is shy, it never tells its name,
it flits across the shade,
spreading a shiver of joy along the dust.
Overtake it or miss it for ever.
But a gift that can be grasped is merely a frail flower,
or a lamp with flame that will flicker.

Lover's Gifts II:
 Come to My Garden Walk
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941)

How
Did the rose
Ever open its heart
And give to this world
All its
Beauty?
It felt the encouragement of light
Against its
Being,
Otherwise,
We will remain
Too
Frightened.

It Felt Love
 Hafiz  (1325 - 1389)

You were born together,
and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together
when white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together
even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens
  dance between you.
Love one another
but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea
between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup
but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread
but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous,
but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone
though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts,
but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life
 can contain your hearts.
And stand together,
 yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow
 not in each other's shadow.

The Prophet
Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931)

  Govinda adi purusham
 tamaham bhajami
(prayer)

Govinda the Original Person I do worship
Playing the flute
As blooming lotusses His eyes
A peackock's feather on top
His fine form like blue clouds
Of millions of Cupids His charm
His unique so lovely
Whose limbs whose organs
possess all functions,
see, maintain,
manifest forever the universes
Blissfull true, fyll of meaning
His form dazzling.

O day, arise! The atoms are dancing.
Thanks to Him the universe is dancing.
The souls are dancing, overcome with ecstasy.
I'll whisper in your ear where their dance is taking them.
All the atoms in the air and in the desert know well,

they seem insane.
Every single atom, happy or miserable,
Becomes enamoured of the sun,

of which nothing can be said.

Poem of the Atoms
 Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

«Δεν έχεις ζήσει ποτέ μια στιγμή αγάπης, προσευχής, ευδαιμονίας; Ούτε έχεις ακούσει ποτέ τη σιωπή της νύχτας; Δεν έχεις συγκλονιστεί απ’αυτήν; Την έχεις αφήσει να σ’αγγίξει; Να σε μεταμορφώσει;
Δεν έχεις δει ποτέ τον ήλιο να ανατέλλει στον ορίζοντα; Δεν έχεις νιώσει ποτέ μια βαθιά αλληλεξάρτηση με τον ήλιο που ανατέλλει; Δεν έχεις νιώσει να χύνεται μέσα σου περισσότερη ζωή;
Μπορεί να το έχεις ζήσει έστω και για μια στιγμή. Δεν έχεις πιάσει ποτέ το χέρι ενός ανθρώπου και να νιώσεις ότι κάτι αρχίζει να ρέει από εσένα προς εκείνον και από εκείνον προς εσένα;
Δεν έχεις δει ποτέ τριαντάφυλλο και δεν έχεις μυρίσει το άρωμά του – και ξαφνικά έχεις μεταφερθεί σε έναν άλλο κόσμο;

Osho

Moon, born by my beloved,
Warm him and tell him, "I love you."
O wind, blow his hair and say, "I love you."
You are totally sugar, completely halva,
Regardless of whether you are here or there.
Whether you come or not, "I love you."
I don't hear the blame.
I am not too weak to ask.
Love is not a toy.
You should really come. "I love you."
Even if they bury me in the ground,
I give my heart to you.
You are still my beloved.
Even if they raise me to the sky, "I love you."
If I climb to the top of the mountain like monks,
I still look for your love.
If I dive to the bottom of the sea,
I still love you in that sea.

Divan-i Kebir, Volume 16
 Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

From the beginning of my life
I have been looking for your face but today I have seen it.
Today I have seen the charm, the beauty,
the unfathomable grace of the face that I was looking for.
Today I have found You
and those that laughed and scorned me yesterday
are sorry that they were not looking as I did.
I am bewildered by the magnificence of your beauty
and wish to see you with a hundred eyes.
My Heart has burned with Passion and has searched forever for this wondrous beauty that I now behold.
I am ashamed to call this Love human
and afraid of God to call it Divine.
Your fragrant breath like the Morning Breeze
has come to the stillness of the garden
You have breathed new Life into me
I have become your Sunshine and also your Shadow.
My Soul is screaming in ecstasy
Every fiber of my being is In Love with You
Your effulgence has lit a Fire in my Heart
and you have made radiant for me the Earth and Sky.
My Arrow of Love has arrived at the target
I am in the house of mercy
and my Heart is a place of prayer.

Looking For Your Face
 Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

Let us be like
two falling stars in the day sky.
Let no one know of our sublime beauty
as we hold hands with God and burn
into a sacred existence that defies -
that surpasses every description
 of ecstasy and love.

The day sky
Hafiz  (1325 - 1389)

In my hallucination
I saw my Beloved’s flower garden
In my vertigo, in my dizziness
In my drunken haze
Whirling and dancing like a spinning wheel

I saw myself as the source of existence
I was there in the beginning
And I was the Spirit of Love
Now I am sober
There is only the hangover
And the memory of Love
And only the sorrow

I yearn for Happiness
I ask for help
I want mercy

And my Love says:
Look at me and hear me
Because I am here
Just for that

I am your Moon and your Moonlight too
I am your flower garden and your water too
I have come all this way, eager for you
Without shoes or shawl

I want you to laugh
To kill all your worries
To Love you
To nourish you

Oh sweet bitterness
I will soothe you and Heal you
I will bring you roses
I, too, have been covered with thorns.

Bittersweet
Rūmī (1207 - 1273)

I seem to have loved you in numberless forms,
 numberless times…
In life after life, in age after age, forever.
My spellbound heart
has made and remade the necklace of songs,
that you take as a gift,
wear round your neck in your many forms,
in life after life, in age after age, forever.
Whenever I hear old chronicles of love, its age-old pain,
Its ancient tale of being apart or together.
As I stare on and on into the past, in the end you emerge,
Clad in the light of a pole-star piercing the darkness of time:
You become an image of what is remembered forever.
You and I have floated here on the stream
that brings from the fount.
At the heart of time, love of one for another.
We have played along side millions of lovers,
shared in the same shy sweetness of meeting,
the same distressful tears of farewell-
Old love but in shapes  that renew and renew forever.
Today it is heaped at your feet, it has found its end in you
The love of all man’s days both past and forever:
Universal joy, universal sorrow, universal life.
The memories of all loves merging with this one love of ours
And the songs of every poet past and forever.

Unending Love
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941)

I have been looking for you, World Honored One,
since I was a little child.
With my first breath, I heard your call,
and began to look for you, Blessed One.
I've walked so many perilous paths,
confronted so many dangers,
endured despair, fear, hopes, and memories.
I've trekked to the farthest regions,
immense and wild, sailed the vast oceans,
traversed the highest summits,
lost among the clouds.
I've lain dead, utterly alone,
on the sands of ancient deserts.
I've held in my heart so many tears of stone.
Blessed One, I've dreamed of drinking dewdrops
that sparkle with the light of far-off galaxies.
I've left footprints on celestial mountains
and screamed from the depths of Avici Hell,
 exhausted, crazed with despair
because I was so hungry, so thirsty.
For millions of lifetimes, I've longed to see you,
but didn't know where to look.
Yet, I've always felt your presence
 with a mysterious certainty.
I know that for thousands of lifetimes,
you and I have been one,
and the distance between us is only a flash of thought.
Just yesterday while walking alone,
I saw the old path strewn with Autumn leaves,
and the brilliant moon, hanging over the gate,
suddenly appeared like the image of an old friend.
And all the stars confirmed that you were there!
All night, the rain of compassion continued to fall,
while lightning flashed through my window
and a great storm arose,
as if Earth and Sky were in battle.
Finally in me the rain stopped, the clouds parted.
The moon returned,
shining peacefully, calming Earth and Sky.
Looking into the mirror of the moon,
suddenly I saw myself,
and I saw you smiling, Blessed One.
How strange!
The moon of freedom has returned to me,
everything I thought I had lost.
From that moment on,
and in each moment that followed,
I saw that nothing had gone.
There is nothing that should be restored.
Every flower, every stone, and every leaf recognize me.
Wherever I turn, I see you smiling
the smile of no-birth and no-death.
The smile I received
while looking at the mirror of the moon.
I see you sitting there, solid as Mount Meru,
 calm as my own breath,
sitting as though no raging fire storm ever occurred,
sitting in complete peace and freedom.
At last I have found you, Blessed One,
and I have found myself.
There I sit.
The deep blue sky,
the snow-capped mountains painted against the horizon,
and the shining red sun sing with joy.
You, Blessed One, are my first love.
The love that is always present,
 always pure, and freshly new.
And I shall never need a love that will be called “last.”
You are the source of well-being
 flowing through numberless troubled lives,
the water from your spiritual stream always pure,
as it was in the beginning.
You are the source of peace, solidity
and inner freedom.
You are the Buddha, the Tathagata.
With my one-pointed mind
I vow to nourish your solidity and freedom in myself
so I can offer solidity and freedom to countless others,
now and forever.

Looking for each other
